Course Description:
For schools to accomplish and sustain meaningful change, it’s important they engage teachers as leaders. Yet, the role of a teacher leader is not always well-defined within a school leadership structure. In most circumstances, teacher leadership roles are informal, and responsibilities are poorly defined. The resulting work can be isolating and lead to frustration. Knowing how a teacher can engage in, contribute to, and define his/her role when leading elements of school change can be more satisfying for teachers and school leaders alike, and can produce more effective results.
This course examines the role of teachers as leaders. You’ll study the impact of change and how teacher leaders can contribute to school improvement efforts. If you’re a teacher engaging in leadership, you’ll build the knowledge and skills that will help you navigate your role in the school. If you’re an administrator, you’ll learn how to support teacher leaders by removing the ambiguity associated with their positions. And whether you’re a teacher or an administrator, you’ll engage in leadership activities to address an identified area of need in the school.
